Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attacked former First Lady Michelle Obama for being “nasty” to him when he was “nice and respectful” to her.
“You know who’s nasty to me? Michelle Obama, oh,” the former president told supporters at his Monday rally in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I always tried to be so nice and respectful. Oh, oh, she opened up a little bit of—a little bit of a box. She opened up a little bit of something. Oh, she was nasty, woo. Shouldn’t be that way. That was a big mistake that she made,” he said.
A video of the comment was uploaded to X on Monday night by user @Acyn, a senior digital editor for the liberal news site MeidasTouch. It had been viewed 568,000 times by Monday morning.
Newsweek has contacted the campaigns of Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris via email for comment.
Trump’s comments come days after Obama delivered harsh words about the Republican former president at a Saturday rally for Kamala Harris in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
“I gotta ask myself: ‘why on earth is this race even close?'” Obama said. “I lay awake at night wondering: ‘what in the world is going on?'”
She described what she saw as a double standard between the high expectations placed on Harris by the public, compared with Trump, whose flaws she said are ignored or treated indifferently.
“I hope you’ll forgive me if I’m a little frustrated that some of us are choosing to ignore Donald Trump’s gross incompetence while asking Kamala to dazzle us at every turn,” Obama said.
“I hope that you’ll forgive me if I’m a little angry that we are indifferent to his erratic behavior, his obvious mental decline, his history as a convicted felon, a known slum lord, a predator found liable for sexual abuse, all of this while we pick apart Kamala’s answers from interviews that he doesn’t even have the courage to do, y’all,” she said.
Trump has said he is not suffering from cognitive decline, and that his felony convictions are the illegitimate result of “lawfare” against him. Trump disputes the finding that he was liable for sexual abuse, calling it “a made-up story.”
Despite Trump’s claim that he “always tried to be so nice and respectful” toward Obama, this is not the first time he called her “nasty”, the same word he used to insult Hillary Clinton in 2016. The former president said Obama had been nasty to him in a speech she gave at the Democratic National Convention in August.
He used her appearance as a punchline for a joke in a 2021 speech to donors at Mar-a-Lago, getting a big laugh out of the crowd when he referred to “Barack Hussein Obama and the very beautiful Michelle.”
